Located at the corner of Fort Beggs Dr. and S. River Rd. is the Fort Beggs site marker. This marks the spot that Fort Beggs was constructed as a defensive fort against the Native Americans during Plainfield’s very early days, not long after the very first settlers had arrived.
What we not consider the fort, started as the home of Rev. Stephen R. Beggs, who was born in 1801. He arrived in Plainfield during the summer of 1831, and when the Black Hawk War broke out, his home was turned to a fort where himself and fellow settlers gathered.
This marker is a very interesting sight within Plainfield as it ties back to the very early years of settlers in this area. Anyone interested in the history of Plainfield should definitely take the time to make a stop by this historical marker!
